$50 Crocs Giveaway!

I wanted to tell you all about a great giveaway Mercedes from Common Sense with Money is doing:

When you think Crocs shoes, chances are very good you think Crocs Cayman. That’s what I thought of too for the longest time, until very recently. Back in April I was lucky enough to win a giveaway for a Crocs Gift certificate on another blog. With this certificate in hand I stopped by the Crocs website to check out their models and WOW! let me tell you, I was in for a surprise. Have you looked at the new models from Crocs? They are so cute! Choosing was definitely hard but I ultimately settled for a nice pair of Celestes. I wanted a pair of comfortable shoes I could wear throughout this pregnancy and beyond.

crocsceleste

But while I looked for those I saw other models that tempted me a LOT! In particular I wanted a pair of Malindis in turquoise. However, I was heartbroken to find out they were already out of that color online. Then I did something completely unlike me. I decided to treat myself to a cute pair of crocs in a cute color. You see, I mostly own black or brown shoes and for me to get a pair of colored shoes is not what I would normally do. I searched high and low for the Turquoise Malindis without any luck. Then in a visit to a Chicago mall we walked by a kiosk selling Crocs and found my shoes. Not the Malindis but this pair of Crocs Olivia in red.

crocsoliviaand I love them! I love the color and they are so cute and feminine. The picture doesn’t show it very well but they have a sparkly charm on the side that adds just the perfect amount of “bling.”. They make me feel very Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.

I am ecstatic to share that Crocs is sponsoring a $50 Crocs gift certificate giveaway here on Common Sense with Money. Yeah! one of you will have a chance to try one of Crocs’ new cute and trendy designs for FREE. All you need to do to enter this giveaway is:

1) Visit Crocs.com and check out the all of the cute designs. Then come back and share which one model and in which color you would get if you won this giveaway.

2) For up to three additional entries, share this giveaway with others on your blog, Facebook or Twitter.

Please make sure to separate comments if you decide to share this giveaway. Each comment is considered an entry and if you share you could earn up to 4 entries that way. This giveaway ends 7/3. Open to U.S. Residents 18 and older please. I will pick one winner and contact him/her at the time the giveaway ends. If after 48 hrs they don’t contact me back I will select another winner.

Not that I wanted to tempt you but in case you may feel tempted *grin*, Crocs is currently offering free shipping with code july4 (case sensitive). And remember this deal? My son is now the proud owner of a pair of Bob the Builder Crocs.

Good Luck!

Visit Common Sense with Money and leave a comment on her post for a chance to win!
Who knew Crocs could be so cute? Now I want some!

My Grocery Shopping Must Have

I have to post about one of my favorite things that I use every time I go grocery shopping. Reusable bags! But not just any old reusable bags will do. I've tried several different brands and types and for me the best have been these VERY large ones found at IKEA stores. Not only do they fit a ridiculous amount of groceries inside (each bag fits about 2 1/2 plastic grocery bags worth of food), but they are sturdy enough for me to haul all those groceries along with my purse, coupon binder and a tired toddler up several flights of stairs to my apartment every week on my grocery trips. (It's so much easier to load all of my stuff into two of these bags then try and juggle all of it and 4-5 thin plastic grocery bags- I've had a few grocery casualties from those things splitting open.)

They are also very stylish! If I remember correctly they are only $1.99. If you are lucky enough to have an IKEA close by I highly recommend investing in a few of these bags because they are amazing!

BIC Triumph Roller Pen Giveaway

Go here to enter for a chance to win a new BIC Triumph Roller Pen. They are giving away 100 pens a day for 30 days. The great part is that it is a lottery system instead of a first-come first-serve basis so everyone has equal chances of getting a pen!

You also have to sign your name on the bottom of the entry form with a movable on-screen "pen" which is kind of funny, and quite hard to maneuver just using a laptop touch pad. Mine looks terrible!

Coupon Myths

As I've encountered more people who are just discovering couponing I think it's great to hear the reasons why they haven't really taken to the idea of using coupons to save money. A very common one is that "coupons are mostly for packaged & processed products that I don't eat" or in other words "there are no coupons for the things I do use." While I used to sometimes think this to myself, I've been surprised many times at some of the coupons that I find for things like bread, canned pineapple, or even tomatoes, not to mention to countless coupons I use to buy toothpaste, shampoo, toilet paper, make-up, diapers, etc. If I'm going to be buying these products anyways why not save a buck (or two) on them?

While I was planning on writing about this topic myself I actually just read a great article by Bargain Briana called "No Coupons For Products I Use" which I recommend reading.

When you're first starting out collecting coupons it can seem like some week it'll be lots of coupons for medicine/pharmacy type products, or lots of pizza coupons but after a few weeks your collection will start to fill out and you'll be surprised at what you find. So go get clipping!

Weekly Shopping Trip

Another week, another grocery trip report.
It seems that just when we were running low on cereal Copps and CVS both had good sales, hence we stocked up and got 10 boxes. My husband eats a lot of cereal...
We also have some good dinner basics already stocked up so this week I was able to put our money towards more non-food items.
There was also a promo running on some cleaning products which I took advantage of. I realize I've been buying quite a bit of cleaners, and body wash/shampoo/etc. type of items lately, but before you start thinking I'm really stinky and mt house is dirty I'm not getting them for myself-my church congregation is collecting various household & personal hygiene supplies to donate for humanitarian aid and I'm trying to put my couponing skills to good use. One of the reasons why I love couponing is because I can get so much stuff for so cheap (or often free) and it allows me to be much more generous than I could have been if I was limited to just donating monetary funds as charitable contributions.
I also found some great clearance deals on Loreal eye shadow, eye liner and mascara at CVS, which I was able to get at 95% off with some good coupons I had (The eyeliner was orginally $8.49 and I got it for 12 cents!) .

Here's how it all stacked up this week:

The General Mills cereal promo also including 2 catalina coupons for a free gallon of milk on my next visit!

Total before sales and coupons: $292.78
I paid: $43.93 (85% Savings)

I can also mail my receipt for the DiGornio Flatbread Melts away for a "try-me-free" offer I have to get $3.19 back (the originaly price on the receipt).
We've still got some money left in the weekly budget to spend this weekend when we go check out the local farmers markets, which I'm really excited about!

How did you all do this week? Leave me a comment!

Comparison Shopping Trip

Before my days of clipping coupons, looking at weekly store ads and watching sales I used to do the bulk of my shopping at Wal-Mart (and a little bit at Costco). Although I still shop at both of these stores on occasion, I have discovered that what often seem to be the most expensive stores are usually the cheapest ones to shop at as opposed to these stores which opt for "everyday low prices" instead of weekly sales and promotions.
What I used to think of as "expensive stores" were really only expensive to the non-bargain savvy. I didn't know how to judge a good sale, and utilize coupons to their full potential. I also would occasionally scan the ads and get frustrated by what seemed to be pages full of terribly-priced items. I just thought it was cheaper, less time consuming and certainly easier to just go to Wal-Mart for my main shpping trips. It certainly was easier, but now that I have some experience under my belt I see that it definitely was NOT less expensive.

To prove my point I thought it would be interesting to do some comparison shopping. I chose to use my grocery trip from this past Wednesday (I shopped at Copps/PickNSave, Festival Foods & Piggly Wiggly) to compare, simply because it was the freshest in my mind.
I didn't think that the sales this week were that great (compared to previous weeks) so I also thought this would maybe sway the vote in Wal-Marts favor, home of "Always Low Prices."

First I went to Wal-Mart and collected all the pricing info for the products I bought.
Here's the run-down of how the stores lined up:

I should point out, as I stated in my previous blog post the original total price (price before sales & promotions) at Copps/Festival Foods/Piggly Wiggly was about $138. As you can see by the above chart the total Wal-Mart price for the same items is only $104.45. Wal-Mart obviously wins the "everyday" price comparison. But, as I said above now I watch the sales and plan my shopping trips and meals around sales instead of my shopping trip around what I feel like eating for the week. You can see that the total price after sales/promos for Copps/FF/PW is only $88.24. Even before coupons are factored in I am already saving about $16!

By carefully scanning each stores ad, and using my Price Point sheets I am able to determine what items in the add were actually a good deal, or "loss leaders" (items that the retailers sell at a loss in order to lead you into the store) as opposed to the prices in the ads that were rubbish.

Perhaps though you still aren't convinced. A $16 price difference might not be enough to persuade a busy person to take the time to look through ads, compare prices and make multiple stops at various grocery stores instead of one stop at a SuperCenter.

Here's where the real money saving comes into play:
I maximized my savings by then matching up those items I planned to purchase to manufacturers coupons. I was also able to take advantage of a couple "FREE item" coupons (one for a free box of Always Inifinity, and one for a free tube of Crest Pro-Health Toothpaste) for even more savings. Copps had 2 promotions running this week which required various minimum purchases in order to get the best price, and these "free item" coupons allowed me to reach those minimum limits without spending more money out of pocket (See this post for more information on how to use coupons for free items in the best way).

Also Copps has weekly "Double Daze" in which they double 5 manufacturers coupons, up to $1, with a minimum $25 purchase (before coupons). I was able to combine the double daze discount with each promotion (I did two separate transactions, one about $26 before coupons and the other about $39 before coupons, so I could double 10 coupons). This is what I like to call "double dipping," when I can get two (or more) different (non-coupon) discounts applied towards the same product.

Because of the various promotions I could take advantage of at Copps which aren't available at Wal-Mart, I increased the value of my coupon savings there. Below I have complied the list of all the coupons I used, and outlined which I would have been able to use at Wal-Mart had I purchased the same items there, and which I was able to use at my Copps/FF/PW grocery trip. (You'll have to double-click on the image to enlarge it)

As you can see I used almost $30 of actual coupons (it varied because the two "Free item" coupons would have deducted a different amount at each store depending on the item's purchase price). At Wal-Mart my coupons would have been scanned at face value, and that's all. My $104 total would have been brought down to $75.69 after using coupons, which is a savings of about 28%. Not bad.

But, by shopping the sales, and combining my coupons to promotions and doubling some, when possible I was able to increase the value of my coupons to $56.55! This brought my total from $88.24 down to a low $31.69! Now my savings has become about 64% off the sale price!

Sales + coupons + catalina promotions + double coupons =$31.69
"Everyday low price" + coupons = $75.69

Is that now worth your time? Just something to think about.

Weekly Shopping Trip

This week was a little sad as far as sales go--especially since I keep reading about the amazing promotions running this week back at the stores I used to shop at in Utah.

But it was probably a good thing since this week I wanted to keep the total low to compensate for last weeks big shopping trip. There was a decent P&G promo at Copps/Pick'N'Save (Buy $35 of P&G products save $10 OYNSO-On Your Next Shopping Order) which I combined with the usual Double Daze deal (double 5 coupons up to $1 on Wed. with a minimum purchase of $25). There was also a dove promotion going (save $5 OYNSO when you buy $15 of Dove products) to which I added a few other things to bring my total above $25 to double some more coupons.

Since I have been out here I have done four or five $25 tranactions each week at Copps, so it was weird only doing 2 today. I was in and out so quick! I also needed a couple other things for dinners this week, so I picked up a few other things from Piggly Wiggly, and Festival Foods.

Here's what I got:

Original Total: $138
What I paid: $32
Savings(coupons & sales): 76%
Coupons Used: $57

As you can see, there aren't many food items. but since i've been stocking up so much the past few weeks, we really only needed a couple of ingredients here and there for the meals I have planned. This is one of the great things about stocking up when prices are dirt cheap; I am no longer at the mercy of the retailers and I can basically miss a week and still have good food to eat. I didn't have time to make it to my last store, so i need to pick up a couple other things, but this week should be about $40 (my goal is about $55/week). I think I did pretty good this week, considering the lack of good sales!

I also was able to utilize two "Free" coupons for crest Pro-Health toothpaste, and for Always Infinity pads. These came in very handy to help me get my total up to $35 for the P&G promotion without having to spend more money out of pocket. I explain more about maximizing the value of Free coupons here.
