My Drugstore Deals: 86% Savings

This week some of my favorite deals at CVS & Walgreens were:

Huggies Little Movers Jumbo Pack $3.50 (CVS)
Nexxus Roundbrush Orignally $16.99, but I got it for $7.62 ( This was a little more of a "splurge" item; I've been really wanting a good round brush! CVS)
Reach Toothbrushes Register Rewards Moneymaker: I found some on clearance for $1.09 each that worked for the "Buy 3 get $6 RR" deal; after using $0.50/1 coupons I paid $1.77 for them and got a $6 RR! (WAGS) so it was a $4.23 moneymaker!
Kids Colgate Toothbrushes (Dora the Explorer) for $0.35 (On clearance for $0.75 and I had a $0.40/1 coupon; WAGS).

I was able to increase my savings at CVS this week by splitting my purchases into 2 transactions and using a coupon for $5 off a $25 purchase (from a survey on their site), and a $4 off $20 purchase from a coupon booklet available from the pharmacy (when you ask about their Readyfill program). The great thing about these coupons is that you only have to get your total above the purchase price amount ($20 or $25) BEFORE coupons-just be sure to hand the cashier this coupon before using manufacturers coupons, so it rings up properly!

I found a TON of them up at the front of the store with the weekly circulars. Ever since Walgreens discontinued their monthly rebate program with the "Easy Saver Catalog," their store coupons have been limited to just those in the weekly ads, which are not nearly as good. This coupon book has a lot of coupons which can be matched up with manufacturer coupons though!

The coupon that I am most excited about is this one:

Their Huggies Wipes 64 ct. tubes are regularly priced at $2.79. With this coupon that makes them only $0.79!! You can also stack it with the $0.50 Huggies Wipes coupon (SmartSource 07/19) to get these for only $0.29 each!

You can bet that I'm going to be stocking up!

You wouldn't know it by this picture that I was moving in 2 weeks! Although I've been trying to buy just basics lately-partly because we're moving and partly because the sales have been terrible-I had such a hard time turning down the sales this week! There was a great sale at Copps on Kelloggs Products which allowed me not only to take advantage of the $10 Kelloggs Mail-in-Rebate, but when I matched this offer up with coupons I had from the Sunday newspaper inserts and special Kelloggs coupon booklets I found at the store and Copps/PickNSave "Double Dayz" double coupons I was able to get $41.97 worth of groceries for just $1.20!

We should have no problem eating up our perishable items before we move, and we are planning on just bringing all the extra boxes of cereal and everything else I've managed to stockpile this summer back to Utah with us. One of the things I hate about moving is after several weeks of cleaning, packing, a long drive is to show up to your new place with weeks of unpacking and organizing and no food. In the past I would inevitably end up making a huge (and expensive) shopping trip within the first couple days to fill our cupboards. Although it might not make sense to many other people to move boxes of cereal, pasta, salad dressing, and tons of other non-perishables across the country it is SO much cheaper to do this when I can get all that food at 70-80% off the full price.

Are you curious how I manage to do this? In the weekly posts I give you the readers digest version of my grocery trips, which are mostly meant to inspire you that consistently having enormous savings by using coupons and sticking to a budget can be done! I also do it to hold myself somewhat accountable to our family budget (sometimes it's easy to get carried away with the deals). This week though I am going to do a full breakdown, step-by-step, of how exactly I combined my coupons to sales and hopefully enlighten new couponers to how you can do it too! Look for that post shortly!

My Drugstore Deals: 90% Savings!

Here are the deals I scooped at Walgreens and CVS this week:

I haven't posted any of my drugstore deals previously, although this is a major source of free products and good "moneymaker" deals. Almost every week at CVS, Walgreens and Rite-Aid there are items that are "free". Although you do pay for the item up front, each item has a slightly different system of how you get your money back. I will post more detailed "how-to" articles of each drugstore, but for now here's a quick rundown:

CVS: you are given Extra Care Bucks or ECB's, which print out at the bottom of your store receipt. CVS is the best store (in my opinion) because ECB's are just like cash and CVS tends to have the most and best deals of all 3 drugstores. You can use ECB's to pay for subsequent purchases without restriction.

This week there were many school supply items that were "free after ECB's." I split up my purchases into 2 transactions and use the ECB's I got in my first transaction to pay for the items I bought in my 2nd so I could lesson my up-front costs; then more ECB's printed on my receipt which I will use on next weeks ECB freebies. ECB's expire after 1 month.

Walgreens: A few months ago Walgreens switched from a having mixture of "Register Reward" promotions (which are similar to Catalinas at the grocery store) and mail-in rebates, to purely just Register Rewards. Although I do miss their mail-in-rebates, Register Rewards (RR) can be quite fruitful as well because they have no limit to how many you can obtain during the promotional period (the rebates were usually limited to 1 per household). The trick with RR is that they are technically "manufacturers coupons" for money off your next purchase, so they are not as easy to use as ECB's. Also another restriction is that you can't use a RR to pay for the same product that produced it. For Example: this week Vitamin Shampoo & Conditioner is free after RR. You pay $4 to purchase it, and then a $4 RR prints out which you can use on anything else except the Vitamin Shampoo & Conditioner. This means you have to get a little creative in how to use your RR's so that you don't end up buying other stuff you don't need just to redeem them. They expire after 2 weeks which also somewhat restricts how easy it is to "roll" them over onto purchasing subsequent free-after-RR items.

Rite Aid: They use the mail-in-rebate system (which can also be submitted online for much quicker return of your rebate check). Throughout the month they will have various items that are free, or have a discount after their "Single Rebate Check." Be sure to keep you receipts and enter in a few pieces of information into your online account (on the Rite-Aid website) including store #, receipt #, and purchase date. Then they will automatically check which rebates you are eligible for and at the end of the month you just request your check to be sent in the mail. It usually only takes 2-4 weeks to arrive (depending on how soon you request it). It's simpler than Walgreens, but usually rebate items are limited to 1 per household.

Now, here's where the "moneymaking" comes in. At each of these stores you can use coupons to purchase the particular rebate/ECB items and you will still receive the full advertised amount back. For example: This week Blink Eyedrops were on sale for $7.99, with $7.99 ECB's (making it free). There was a $3/1 coupon in the paper this past Sunday which you could use to buy it making your cost only $4.99 and still receiving back the $7.99 ECB for your next purchase. The same principle holds true for Walgreens and Rite-Aid.

End of the Month Coupon Grocery Run!

I always try to remember to flip through my coupon binder for any high value or really good coupons at the end of the month that might be expiring (most coupons expire on the last day of the month, or the first day of the month) so I can be sure to use the ones I want.

Today I made an extra trip to the grocery store to see if I could scoop up a few more deals from soon-to-expire coupons:

I got some trial size Tide laundry detergents with my $1/1 coupons expiring today, and fortunately I got another great cashier at Target who let me use them. Hooray for free laundry detergent!

I also had some $0.75/2 Ortega Products that also expired today which can always get some pretty cheap Taco seasoning packets at Walmart. I also lucked out with these because my Walmart had them marked down to $0.35 each! So I actually got a 5 cent overage for each coupon I used.

Remember those Bogo milk coupons I blogged about last week? The coupon was good for 1 free 1/2 gallon chocolate milk, up to $3.75, when you buy 1 gallon white milk. Usually the cashier has to key in the amount that the "Free" product costs but when I used one tonight the register automatically deducted $3.75 even though the chocolate milk only cost $1.59. I got a $2 overage from that which is always a wonderful surprise at the checkout! (This isn't the first time I've gotten a really sweet overage from a "free milk" coupon either, by the way.)

I also got 5 more boxes of 40 ct. Electrasol Finish Dishwasher Gelpacks at Target with my $2.50/1 coupons and a raincheck for the sale price of $3.50/box from a couple weeks back when they were sold out. I've gotten a LOT of boxes of Electrasol, but it's such an amazing price I had to stock up on them. Since I only get 4 copies of the Sunday paper coupon inserts each week right now I bought some extra coupons for these on EBay (FYI: EBay can be a great place to score some cheap coupons on a specific item when you know a really good sale is coming up).

The sales the past few weeks at Copps have been pretty weak at best, so I've had to fill in a lot of the holes at Walmart, which I hate because I know I'm not getting the best prices. It's being reported that the register reward for Pilot 2-pack Gel Pens at Walgreens this week are rolling! The register rewards that are printing out for the pens simply say "Thank-you for your purchase" and don't have a company name at the bottom (which usually excludes you from using that register reward to purchase the same product that produced it). This means that you can buy a pack of pens for $1, get your $1 RR and then use that on your next pack of pens (separate transactions of course) and pay nothing out of pocket!

I'm super excited about this because I love these pens and was worried that I was going to get stuck with a bunch of RR by the end of the week with nothing to use them on (especially since next week is going to be pretty dull for Walgreens, according to the SlickDeals ad preveiw). A reader gave me a tip of how to turn this deal into a small moneymaker:

Buy all the FAR (free-after-rebate) items together: $22.93
Add in a small filler item to bring your total up to $25: $2.07 (or more)
Use a "$5 off of a purchase of $25" or more coupon (found in the Entertainment Book)

Total is $20 and get back $22.93 for your rebate.

It'll make your filler item free and offset some of the tax of the rebate items! The Entertainment coupon doesn't expire until Dec 31st 2009, so if you can get extras from friends or family with the Entertainment Book you can use them for future rebates.
